Safety Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a safe country with a low crime rate. Crime is mainly limited to theft and pickpocketing. Nevertheless, as a traveler you should always observe a certain caution, this is not different from other countries in the world. Some popular places in Cape Verde where theft can occur are:

Santiago
The capital Praia on Santiago is a safe city. Like any big city, there is more turmoil and a chance of pickpockets. In Praia, the area around the Sucapira market is a paradise for pickpockets. Pay special attention to your belongings here.

Sal and Boavista
Theft sometimes occurs in deserted places and beaches, for example near the beach of Santa Monica (Boavista). Another popular spot for potentials thefts is at Buracona (‘blue eye’) on the island of Sal, where a number of car break-ins have been reported.

Sao Vicente
Mindelo on Sao Vicente is a city where people come and go. Beggars can be found on the waterfront and Amílcar Cabral Square. Often these are children (hired) who can even follow you to your hotel and take your money out of your bag. Pickpockets are also active. This is often in the evening or at night.

Emergency phone numbers

Police: 132
Fire Department: 131
Ambulance: 130

On Sal you can also reach the police on telephone number 24211132 and the fire brigade on telephone number 2411131. On Boavista, the police and fire brigade also have a direct number, namely telephone number 2511131 for the police and telephone number 2511141 for the fire brigade. For problems with your travel documents or hospitalization, you can contact the embassy or consulate.

In short, Cape Verde is a safe to a very safe country. Cape Verdeans want to keep their country free from theft and other crime. As in any country you should always watch your belongings. In addition, showing off wealth (possessions) is also asking for trouble. For the current travel advice for Cape Verde, see the travel advice page.
